Place the phone flat on the dashboard. Default mode uses the TOP edge of the phone as the hood direction, exactly like the phone Compass app. If you place the bottom edge toward the hood, switch it in settings. The car itself acts as the compass needle; the sun stays on its real east-to-west path.
